Joe Girardi became the first candidate to interview with George Steinbrenner about the vacant manager position with the New York Yankees.
The team just lost Joe Torre, who managed the team to 12 consecutive playoff appearances and four World Series titles, after he turned down a one-year, $5 million contract.
Yankees bench coach Don Mattingly, scheduled to be interviewed Tuesday, is considered the favorite.
Girardi spent about five hours with the Yankees' baseball operations staff, and an hour with Steinbrenner, sons Hank and Hal, son-in-law Felix Lopez and team president Randy Levine.
Hank Steinbrenner seemed to reinforce the notion that Mattingly began the process ahead of the others.
Steinbrenner said one or two others will be asked to interview, but former Mets and Texas Rangers manager Bobby Valentine isn't on the list.
Girardi caught for the Yankees from 1996-99, served as a bench coach in 2005, then managed the Florida Marlins the following year. He kept a young team in contention until September, then was fired, apparently for clashing with owner Jeffrey Loria and others above him.
Girardi said his departure from the Marlins was discussed Monday. Hank Steinbrenner said he wasn't concerned.
Girardi was voted NL Manager of the Year for his work with the Marlins and joined the Yankees' YES Network as a broadcaster this season. He turned down the Baltimore Orioles' managing job last summer, choosing instead to spend time with his father, who had health problems.
The Yankees have a lot on their plates in addition to finding a new manager. Closer Mariano Rivera is now a free agent and third baseman Alex Rodriguez is mulling over whether he should opt out of his contract and become a free agent as well.
Rivera was a strong advocate for Torre to stay, but has said that, as he enters free agency, the new manager has nothing to do with his decision. He said that he is patiently waiting.
The situation with Rodriguez has never been based if Torre stayed or not, but on if the Yankees were going to pay him what he is worth.
