BCS Clash: #2 Boston College Faces #8 Virginia Tech for ACC Battle

Atlanta, GA 10/23/2007 11:04:03 PM

No. 2 Boston College plays their most difficult ACC opponent Thursday when they take on No. 8 Virginia Tech.  The game will likely determine who will win the ACC Championship and who will represent the ACC in the BCS race. Both teams share the same ranking in both the AP top 25 and in the BCS standings.

This is the biggest game to come to Blacksburg since the infamous school shooting at the campus in April.

Boston College, who just moved up a spot after then-No. 2 South Florida lost to Rutgers, 30-27, is having one of the best seasons in school history.

Quarterback Matt Ryan is looking to be the first Heisman Trophy winner at BC since Doug Flutie in 1984. Ryan will have a tough road as he goes up against the stifling Hokies defense, which is ranked the 13th best total defense in the nation. The linebacker duo of Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi will have their eyes on Ryan’s every moves.

The Hokies defense is so potent that is the sole reason why they are winning games. Senior quarterback Sean Glennon was benched early in the season for freshman Tyrod Taylor, who is showing why he is the future of the program. However, the V-Tech offense is dead last in the ACC in total offense and 112th in the nation with just 298.9 yards per game.

In comparison, BC has the ACC’s best offense with 455.4 yards per game. Ryan is ninth in the nation in total offense.

While V-Tech is pretty well-rounded as a defense, BC is just one that can stop the run. They are the nation’s best rush defense, giving up just 46.4 yards on the ground per game. However, their pass defense is porous, resulting in an average 277.1 yards per game in the air. Although safety Jamie Silva and cornerback Dejuan Tribble are one of the nation’s best secondary duos, the Eagles pass defense is last in the ACC.
