BCS Clash: #4 Arizona State Hosts #21 California Saturday in Pac-10 Rivalry

Atlanta, GA 10/24/2007 4:01:54 AM

Arizona State, the nation’s fourth-ranked team, will host No. 21 California in what many expected to be a very important Pac 10 game. That was before then-no. 2 Cal lost two weeks ago to Oregon State, 31-28, and dropped them out of the top five.

The Golden Bears dropped to No. 12 and then lost a second consecutive game to unranked UCLA, 30-21.

On the flipside, Arizona State is enjoying their highest ranking since ending the 1996 season at No. 4. After four top 10 teams lost last week, the Sun Devils moved up three spots into the top five.

In Arizona State's 49-21 loss to Cal last Sept. 23, Sun Devils quarterback Rudy Carpenter had one of the worst games of his career, completing 16-of-36 passes for 177 yards and a career-high four interceptions.

This season, Carpenter has been leading a high-powered Arizona State unit that is second in the Pac-10 in scoring (37.7 points per game) and offense (437.3 yards per game).

Carpenter went 20-of-31 for 227 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the Sun Devils' 44-20 victory over Washington in their last game on Oct. 13. He has thrown for 1,064 yards, nine TDs and five picks in Pac-10 play.

Arizona State amassed season highs of 523 total yards and 296 rushing yards against the Huskies, as Keegan Herring ran 10 times for 119 yards, including a career-long 76-yard touchdown run and Dimitri Nane had 92 rushing yards and a TD on 13 attempts.

California’s defense is better than Washington’s, but with a more high-powered offense as well. Nathan Longshore had a great game against Arizona State last year, completing 18-of-26 for 270 yards and four touchdowns. DeSean Jackson had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. He also ran back a punt return for a touchdown in the game.

With Longshore, Jackson and running back Justin Forsett, Cal’s offense can match up well with Arizona State’s. Cal has a better receiving corps with Jackson, Lavelle Hawkins and Robert Jordan, while Arizona State has a better quarterback in Carpenter.

The game will be determined by who can outscore their opponent. This game looks to be high-powered and full of scoring.
