Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists in regulation and then added the game-winner in the shootout as the Atlanta Thrashers (2-7-0) beat the Toronto Maple Leafs (3-4-3) 5-4 on Tuesday night.
The Thrashers very nearly had the game won in regulation but Toronto’s Alexei Ponikarovsky snuck the puck past Johan Hedberg with ten seconds left in the third period to tie the score 4-4 and force an overtime.

After Hal Gill scored in the second period for the Leafs the score was once again even but Eric Perrin put the Thrashers in front once more at the 14:12 mark.
Todd White gave the Thrashers a 4-3 lead 13 minutes into the third period and it looked like that would hold up until Ponikarovsky scored with ten seconds left on the clock.
