World Series News: Josh Beckett Looks to Cool Off Rockies Bats as Boston Red Sox Host Colorado in Game 1.

Josh Beckett Faces Jeff Francis in World Series Game One

Atlanta, Ga. 10/24/2007 10:43:36 PM

Josh Beckett will take the hill tonight for the Boston Red Sox and look to cool off the Colorado Rockies and one of baseball’s most remarkable runs. Game 1 is being billed as the immovable object v. the unstoppable force with the bats of Colorado taking aim at the Thor-like arm of Beckett.

In his 23 innings of work during this year’s postseason Beckett has allowed three runs, good enough for a 1.17 ERA. As impressive as his 26 strikeouts over that period, it is the one walk that has given up that blows the mind. Not only does Beckett control the flow of the game when he’s on the mound, he seems to instill an added air of confidence in the Red Sox bats as the club has won all three games the righty has pitched this postseason by a combined 21-4 count.

Of course that’s not to say the Rockies are willing to concede just yet. This is a club that has rattled off 21 wins in 22 games and blew through the NLDS and NLCS with series sweeps against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks. As a collective whole, the Rockies lineup has created a balanced attack with a new-hero-every-night type mentality that has paid amazing dividends.

There are questions whether their lengthy eight-game layoff between games will some how cool their bats, especially against the arm of Beckett. Colorado doesn’t seem to think the rest has hurt their focus and they will certainly be swinging tonight when they take the field for their first ever World Series game.

For the Red Sox, this trip to the World Series bears a few similarities to their last trip in 2004. While it hasn’t been 86-years since they won their last title (they swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the ’04 series) their path to the World Series took a similar route. Much like they did in 2004 the Red Sox breezed through their opening round series against the LA Angles and appeared ready to do the same against the Cleveland Indians after taking the first game of the ALCS. Three straight losses later the Red Sox were on the brink of elimination and needing to win in Cleveland to keep their season alive.

Beckett tossed his second gem of the series to pull the Red Sox to 3-2 in the series and send the series back to Boston where they battered the Indians 23-4 over the next two games to earn their ticket to the World Series.

Lost in the legend of Beckett is the story of Jeff Francis, the Rockies ace who will take the mound on Wednesday night hoping to keep Boston at bay. Francis only had time to appear in two games this postseason as the Rockies swept their way into the World Series but over those two games Francis has put up impressive numbers. He’s only tossed 12 2/3 innings but has struck out 12 while allowing three runs and walking three. He should be well rested when he faces Kevin Youkalis, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and the rest of the Boston bashers tonight.

The World Series will be broadcast on Fox beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
