BCS Clash: #5 Oregon Hosts #12 USC in Heated Pac-10 Battle

Atlanta, GA 10/25/2007 3:12:46 AM

#12 USC travels to Eugene to take on #5 Oregon Saturday in a matchup that can determine the Pac-10 championship. USC has won or shared the conference title four years in a row.

USC and Oregon both have one conference loss, while Arizona State and UCLA are undefeated in Pac-10 play. The difference is Oregon lost to higher-ranked California, while Southern Cal lost to the worst team in the conference, Stanford.

If Oregon can defeat the Trojans, they can continue their path to the Pac-10 title and possibly, the national championship.

USC has been the favorite to win in 45 consecutive conference games. That streak ends Saturday.

Oregon is the favorite to win, for they have one of the nation's most prolific offenses. The Ducks are second in total offense (550.9), second in scoring offense (46.6 points per game) and third in rushing offense (294.4).

Quarterback Dennis Dixon has gone from a virtual unknown to the Pac-10's frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. Dixon leads the conference in pass efficiency and total offense. Running back Jonathan Stewart leads the conference and is fourth in the nation in rushing yards per game (134.3). Along with Jeremiah Johnson and Dixon's dual-threat abilities, the Ducks are a force on the ground.

USC is the perfect team to match up with Oregon's offense. The Trojans are third in the nation in total defense (252.1) and fourth in rushing defense (64.1). USC has the tools to slow down and contain the firepower of the Oregon's offense. Led by Butkus Award semifinalist Keith Rivers, the Trojans will be ready to eradicate the Ducks' offensive game.

John David Booty has missed the last two games due to a broken middle finger on his throwing hand. He threw in practice Tuesday without the glove he used last week, but still felt pain in the finger.
