Josh Beckett Rocks, Red Sox Bats Roll as Colorado Gets Pounded in World Series Opener.

Atlanta, Ga. 10/25/2007 11:09:22 AM

Josh Beckett threw seven innings of six hit ball, striking out nine while allowing just one run as the Boston Red Sox pounded the Colorado Rockies 13-1 on Wednesday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven 2008 World Series.

Much was made about the Rockies eight-game layoff heading into the World Series and in the first inning it looked like the extended time off may have effected their bats as Beckett struck out the side.

The Red Sox then jumped on Colorado starter Jeff Francis with three runs in the bottom half of the frame as Dustin Pedroia led of the inning with a homerun while Manny Ramirez collected an RBI with a single and J.D. Drew doubled home a run.

Beckett collected two more strikeouts in the top of the second but Garrett Atkins, who reached on a one-out double, scored when Troy Tulowitzki doubled him home with two-outs.

David Ortiz got the run back for the Red Sox in the bottom half of the second when his two-out double scored Kevin Youkilis and Boston took a 4-1 advantage.

Boston scored a pair of runs in the fourth when Jason Varitek doubled home Ortiz and Ramirez but it was the fifth inning that sealed the game for Red Sox Nation as they put seven runs on the board, all seven of those came with two outs.

The big-three for Boston, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez went a combined 8-14, scored 8 runs and collected 5 RBIs. As a team the Red Sox banged out 17 hits in the game.

Both teams will meet again on Thursday night in Boston as Game 2 is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
