Josh Beckett threw seven innings of six hit ball, striking out nine while allowing just one run as the Boston Red Sox pounded the Colorado Rockies 13-1 on Wednesday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven 2008 World Series.
Much was made about the Rockies eight-game layoff heading into the World Series and in the first inning it looked like the extended time off may have effected their bats as Beckett struck out the side.
The Red Sox then jumped on
Beckett collected two more strikeouts in the top of the second but Garrett Atkins, who reached on a one-out double, scored when Troy Tulowitzki doubled him home with two-outs.
David Ortiz got the run back for the Red Sox in the bottom half of the second when his two-out double scored Kevin Youkilis and Boston took a 4-1 advantage.
