Curt Schilling Leads and the Bullpen Follows as Boston Red Sox Take Game 2 Over Colorado Rockies

Atlanta, Ga. 10/26/2007 11:22:29 AM

Curt Schilling threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, Hideki Okajima tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings and struck out four, and Jonathan Papelbon shut the door over the final 1 1/3 innings as the Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Thursday night to grab a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven World Series.

It was an ominous start for Schilling as he started the game by hitting leadoff man Willy Taveras. After getting Kaz Matsui to fly out to center Matt Holliday reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Mike Lowell that put Taveras on third. Todd Helton then plated Taveras on a ground out to first and the Rockies were in front 1-0.

Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez held the Red Sox hitless over the first 3 1/3 innings but in the fourth he walked Lowell and J.D. Drew followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Jason Varitek then hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the score 1-1.

Jimenez looked to be settled down when he retired the first two batter sin the bottom of the fifth but a walk to David Ortiz and a single by Manny Ramirez led to a double by Lowell that scored Ortiz and the Red Sox grabbed the lead.

Schilling started the sixth inning and quickly got Matsui to pop out to short but then gave up a single to Holliday and walked Helton. Boston manager Terry Francona went to the bullpen and called upon Okajima who got Garrett Atkins to ground out and then struck out Brad Hawpe to end the inning.

Okajima then set the Rockies down in order in the seventh and struck out the first two in the eight before Papelbon came in to face Holliday. After Holliday singled up the middle Helton came up representing the go-ahead run but Papelbon caught Holliday napping and picked him off to end the inning.

When Helton came up in the ninth Papelbon struck him out. The fireballer then got Atkins to line out to center before striking out Hawpe to end the game.

The series now shifts to Colorado where the two teams will meet on Saturday in game three.
