Heisman Trophy Race: College Football Week 8

Atlanta, GA 10/27/2007 4:00:08 AM

The Heisman Trophy race gets closer and closer to the end. Some have been exposed; others have been moved to the forefront. The race has been like this season: unpredictable.

Boston College had a bye this past week, but they play Virginia Tech tonight. Quarterback Matt Ryan will have a tough game against a great defense.

Kentucky quarterback Andre’ Woodson was riding high after a huge win against then-#1 LSU. He faced a very tough game against Florida. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pull the upset two weeks in a row. He completed 35-of-50 passes for 415 yards and five touchdowns. For the first time in four games, he did not throw an interception. Kentucky plays Mississippi State Saturday. The Bulldogs have the nation’s 18th best pass defense.

Many say Woodson lost the quarterback battle to Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who led the Gators to the 45-37 win against the Wildcats. Tebow threw 18-for-26 for 256 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran 20 times for 78 yards. Tebow has proven himself to be the nation’s best dual-threat quarterback as first in the nation in passing efficiency yet also leads his team in rushing yards with 82.6 yards per game. Tebow returns to hometown Jacksonville Saturday to take on heated rival Georgia.

Arkansas running back Darren McFadden made up for his awful showing against Auburn by rushing for 110 yards on 22 carries against Ole Miss. The Razorbacks destroyed the Rebels, 44-8. They play Florida International Saturday, a team whose rushing defense is 102nd in the nation.

Michigan running back Mike Hart did not play against Illinois. The Wolverines won 27-17. Hart is questionable on Saturday against Minnesota. He is still nursing a right ankle injury suffered the previous week in a win over Purdue.

Quarterback Dennis Dixon is right behind Tebow as one of the nation’s best dual-threat quarterbacks. Last week in a 55-34 win against Washington, Dixon threw 19-of-30 for 190 yards and also ran 12 times for 107 yards. He threw one touchdown, one interception and ran for another touchdown. The big test is this Saturday against USC.

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan had a bye week. He plays Saturday against New Mexico State.

Rutgers running back Ray Rice had a monstrous game this past week as he and the Scarlet Knights upset then-#2 South Florida, 30-27. Rice had 39 carries for 181 yards, but for the first time all season, he did not score. Rutgers has yet another big game as they take on West Virginia Saturday.
