College Football Scores: Tennessee Volunteers Survive Second Half Collapse with Overtime Win over #16 South Carolina

Atlanta, Ga. 10/28/2007 11:03:08 AM

Daniel Lincoln kicked a 48-yard field goal at the end of regulation and then connected on a 27-yarder in overtime to lift the Tennessee Volunteers to a 27-24 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night.

It looked as if Tennessee would cruise past South Carolina as they dominated the first half and carried a 21-0 lead into the locker room but in the second half the Volunteers crumbled and the Gamecocks took advantage.

Gamecocks quarterback Blake Mitchell scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard run and Cory Boyd cut the Volunteers lead to 21-14 when he busted a 29-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.

South Carolina evened the score early in the fourth when Mitchell hit Kenny McKinley on an 8-yard touchdown pass and the Volunteers looked stunned. That look turned to horrified when Gamecocks kicker Ryan Succop connected on a 49-yard field goal with 1:23 left on the clock and the South Carolina had a 24-21 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff LaMarcus Coker took the Ball up to the Tennessee 47 yard line giving the Volunteers a chance to mount a final drive. The play of the game came when Arian Foster took a handoff and fumbled into the South Carolina secondary but the Gamecocks were unable to secure the ball and Tennessee recovered. With new life they managed to get within Lincoln’s range and he set up for the game-tying field goal.

Fortunately for the Volunteers, a false start penalty negated Lincoln’s first attempt as it sailed wide. Lincoln was pushed back an additional five-yards but on his second attempt was able to sneak it in the left upright to force overtime.

Tennessee had the ball first in overtime and had to settle for a field goal and turned their hopes to their defense. That defense came up big as they forced South Carolina into a 41-yard field goal attempt and this time Succop’s kick sailed wide right and Tennessee won.

Tennessee is now 5-3 on the year and 3-2 in the SEC while the loss dropped the Gamecocks to 6-3 and 3-3 in conference play.
