Red Sox Within One of World Series Title After Taking Game 3 From Rockies

Atlanta, Ga. 10/28/2007 11:56:39 AM

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and striking out five while Jacoby Ellsbury finished the night 4-5 with two RBIs and Dustin Pedroia went 3-5 while driving in a pair as the Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 10-5 on Saturday night to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven World Series.

The Red Sox did it with a big inning once again as they plated six runs in the top of the third inning off Rockies starter Josh Fogg.

Ellsbury started the inning off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single from Pedroia. David Ortiz followed with a double to score Ellsbury and Manny Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases. Mike Lowell followed with a single to center, driving in Pedroia and Ortiz to make the score 3-0. J.D. Drew popped out to short for the first out of the inning and Jason Varitek followed with a single but Ramirez was gunned down at the plate for the second out. Julio Lugo then walked to load the bases and Matsuzaka collected his first MLB hit and RBI as he singled to left to score Lowell and Varitek. Ellsbury then collected his second double of the inning to drive home Lugo and the Red Sox were in front 6-0 and that was the end of the night for Fogg.

Matsuzaka cruised through the first five innings and retired Matt Holliday to start the bottom of the sixth but then issued a walk to Todd Helton and another to Garrett Atkins. Boston manager Terry Francona opted to pull Matsuzaka and bring in Javier Lopez who gave up back-to-back singles to Brad Hawpe and Yorvit Torrealba to put the score at 6-2. Mike Timlin came in to relieve Lopez and retired the final two batters to end the inning.

Timlin returned in the seventh and gave up a bunt single to Kaz Matsui and a single to Troy Tulowitzki and once again Francona went to his bullpen. Hideki Okajima came in and promptly served up a three-run homer to Holliday and the score was 6-5. Okajima then gave up a single to Helton before striking out Atkins and Hawpe and getting Torrealba to ground out on a come-backer.

The Red Sox repaired the damage in the top of the eight as Ellsbury’s third double of the game scored Lugo and Pedroia followed with a double that scored Coco Crisp and Ellsbury to put the score at 9-5.

Boston would tack on another run in the ninth on a Varitek sacrifice fly and Jonathan Papelbon had little trouble shutting the door in the bottom half of the frame.

Boston can wrap up the World Series on Sunday night when they play game four in Colorado at 8:00 pm ET.
