Alex Rodriguez has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees and will now test the free-agent waters. Scott Boras, Rodriguez’s agent, confirmed that his star client’s decision was made earlier today.
While Rodriguez’s decision to opt out of his contract doesn’t necessarily end his tenure in a Yankees uniform, it is highly unlikely the two-time MVP will be donning the pinstripes next season. Yankees GM Brain Cashman had already said that if Rodriguez opted out the club would not pursue talks.
A-Rod’s decision is said to be based on the uncertainty surrounding the future plans of Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte.
Rodriguez is a favorite to win his third MVP after finishing the year with 54 homeruns, 156 RBIs and a .314 batting average.
In his four seasons with the Yankees Rodriguez hit 173 homeruns and drove in 513 runs.
