Boston Red Sox 2007 World Series Champions After Sweeping Colorado Rockies

Atlanta, Ga. 10/29/2007 11:06:59 AM

For the second time in four years the Boston Red Sox have captured a World Series title with a convincing sweep. Four years ago it was the St. Louis Cardinals who ran into a Red Sox franchise determined to end an 86-year title drought, this year it was the Colorado Rockies who fell victim to a Red Sox team that fused strong starting pitching, a lights out bullpen, late season call-ups and established stars.

On Sunday night the Red Sox formula worked again as John Lester threw 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball, and didn’t allow a run.

Boston’s bats provided an early 1-0 lead for Lester as David Ortiz singled of Rockies starter Aaron Cook to bring home Jacoby Ellsbury who led the inning off with a double.

The Red Sox struck again in the top of the fifth when Mike Lowell led the inning off with a double and came around to score on a one-out single by Jason Varitek.

Lester continued to look strong for Boston as he retired the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth but after issuing a walk to Garrett Atkins his night was over. Boston manager Terry Francona went to his bullpen and called on Manny Delcarmen to get the final out of the inning.

Lowell then gave the Red Sox a little more breathing room in the top of the seventh when he sent a Cook delivery deep into the seats beyond the left field wall and Boston was up 3-0.

Colorado finally got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh as Brad Hawpe greeted Delcarmen with a bomb to right to pull the Rockies to within 3-1. Delcarmen then got Yorvit Torrealba to fly out but surrendered a single to pinch-hitter Cory Sullivan. Francona went to his bullpen once again and this time Mike Timlin came on to end the threat as he struck out Kaz Matsui and Troy Tulowitzki.

Bobby Kielty pinch hit for Timlin to start the top of the eight and he homered to deep left off Brian Fuentes to provide the three-run cushion once again. Fuentes then gave up a single to Ellsbury but got Dustin Pedroia to ground into a double play. After David Ortiz walked Manny Corpas was called on to face Manny Ramirez and he struck out the Red Sox right-fielder.

Hideki Okajima came on to pitch the eight for the Red Sox and quickly got Matt Holliday to ground out. Todd Helton followed with a single and then Atkins pulled the Rockies to within one when he homered to left. Not taking any chances, Francona called upon Jonathan Papelbon to record the final two outs of the inning and the hard throwing righty obliged.

After the Red Sox went down in order in the top of the ninth Papelbon returned to the hill to secure the sweep in the bottom half of the frame. Torrealba started the inning off with a groundout to second. Jamey Carroll came on to pinch-hit and hit a drive to left that Ellsbury caught at the wall. Seth Smith represented the Rockies final hope but Papelbon struck him out on a 2-2 fastball to end the World Series.
