While George Steinbrenner may be handing over the day-to-day-operations of the New York Yankees to his sons it hasn’t stopped him from voicing his opinion on matters concerning the team.
After hearing about the decision made by Alex Rodriguez to opt out of his contract and test the free-agent waters Steinbrenner effectively told the two-time MVP to forget about playing in pinstripes. Speaking to the New York Daily News the opinionated owner offered this critique, “It's clear he didn't want to be a Yankee. He doesn't understand the privilege of being a Yankee on a team where the owners are willing to pay $200 million to put a winning product on the field.”
The announcement that Rodriguez would opt out of his contract was made during last night’s World Series game in which the Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies to complete a sweep and win their second title in four years.
Steinbrenner made clear that A-Rod’s playing days as a Yankee have come to a close, “I don't want anybody on my team that doesn't want to be a Yankee.” He went on to say conclusively, “It's goodbye.”
