NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs Open NBA Season Against Portland Trailblazers Tuesday on TNT
The NBA season starts Tuesday as the reigning NBA champion San Antonio Spurs take on the Portland Trailblazers at 8pm on TNT. It is the first game of a doubleheader, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Houston Rockets.
This game was billed as the present vs. the future, as Tim Duncan faced #1 pick Greg Oden. However, that changed when Oden had to undergo microfracture surgery, causing him to miss the entire season.
The Spurs return pretty much the same team that won the championship last year. Duncan averaged 20 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game last season, while point guard Tony Parker, the 2007 NBA Finals MVP, averaged 18.6 points and 5.5 assists per game. Parker married "Desperate Housewives" actress Eva Longoria soon after the Finals in a very publicized wedding.
Small forward Bruce Bowen returns as one of the league's best on-ball defenders. Shooting Manu Ginobili comes back as one of the league's best penetrators and mid-range shooters.
The Spurs have been very consistent with the play, roster and coaching due to head coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs front office management. The franchise has won four championship in nine years.
The Blazers return one of the league's most talented groups of young players. 2006 NBA Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy will be called on for more leadership this season as Zach Randolph was traded to the New York Knicks. Center LaMarcus Aldridge should improve his strength and productivity, especially with Oden and Randolph not in the picture. Both players have suffered minor injuries (Roy's heel, Aldridge's toe), but both have said that the injuries are heeled.
Point guard Jarrett Jack was the team's third-leading scorer last season with 12 points per game. He also added 5.3 assists per game and should increase both statistics this season.
