The New York Yankees did their best to bury the news surrounding Alex Rodriguez with news that Joe Girardi has been offered the managerial position left vacant after Joe Torre turned down the club’s $5 million offer.
Girardi is expected to be announced as the new skipper on Tuesday.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman has already told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena, both of whom interviewed for the post, that they would not be chosen to succeed Torre.
Girardi won three World Series titles as a player with the Yankees and after retiring in 2002 he too a few years off before becoming manager of the Florida Marlins in 2006. He was named Manager of the Year for his efforts in keeping his young club in contention late into the season but did not return the following season after butting heads with the front-office.
