Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson Neck and Neck for Chase Championship
Jimmie Johnson pulled to within 9-points of Jeff Gordon in the Chase for the Nextel Cup on Sunday after taking the checkered flag at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Pep Boys Auto 500.
Johnson’s victory came in large part to crew chief Chad Knaus’ decision to change two tires instead of four during a pit stop while the race was under caution. That decision moved Johnson from fifth to second with just two laps left when the race restarted.
When the drivers got the green light for the restart Denny Hamlin held lead position but he quickly ran out of gas and Johnson assumed the front spot. It was Hamlin’s car that caused the 12th caution of the race as it sat motionless on the track while other drivers were forced to swerve around it. Unfortunately for Martin Truex Jr. he clipped the back and the yellow flag was back out.
With the win Johnson moved to within nine points of Gordon with three races left in the Chase.
