The Detroit Tigers wasted little time getting started on their off-season moves as they traded for Atlanta Braves All-Star shortstop Edgar Renteria on Monday.
Renteria, a career .291 hitter, finished his second season with the Braves hitting .332 with 12 homeruns and 57 RBIs in 124 games. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski was excited about the move saying, “We were able to address our biggest need, heading into the winter, with one of the best shortstops in the game.”
The need came about after deciding to move Carlos Guillen to first base due to health concerns for the 32-year-old.
Renteria became expendable after the impressive rise of Cuban born Yunel Escobar who had a strong year at the plate and filled in nicely at shortstop when Renteria was injured.
