Curt Schilling wrote his Boston Red Sox teammates personal notes in case the pitcher does not return to the team next season.
Schilling, an integral part of both Red Sox World Series teams in the last four years, is eligible to become a free agent.
The 41-year old said in spring training he would return for one more year at his current salary of $13 million, but the Red Sox wanted to see how he performed this season while adjusting to life without a 90 mph fastball.
Schilling went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA, and went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in the postseason as the Red Sox won their second title in four seasons. He is one of the biggest potential free agents on the team, along with third baseman Mike Lowell, who was the World Series MVP.
Schilling expects Lowell to hold talks with the New York Yankees since their third baseman Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract and is now a free agent. Lowell started his career in the Yankees minor leagues.
The Yankees are the only team that Schilling is not interested in playing for.
