Dallas Mavericks Open Season Against Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday on ESPN
The Cleveland Cavaliers open their season Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks at 8pm on ESPN. This is the first of a doubleheader that opens the NBA season coverage for ESPN.
The Cavaliers are trying to rebound this season after getting swept in the NBA Finals by the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavs suffered the most disappointment last season by having one of the best records in league history (67-15), but losing in the first round to the Golden State Warriors.
According to the NBA.com GM survey, LeBron James is the pick to win the NBA MVP this season. He starts his season against last year's MVP, Dirk Nowitzki. James, joined Oscar Robertson last season as the only players to average at least 27.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in three straight years.
For tonight's game, James and the Cavs will be without Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic. Both are holding out for better contracts and since Cleveland's front office isn't budging, it appears both players are prepared to sit out the season.
The Mavs will also be without a key player. Swingman Josh Howard, who averaged a career-high 18.9 points last season, was suspended for the first two games for his role in an altercation with Sacramento's Brad Miller in a preseason contest.
The Mavs have the formula to win a championship, but they have to turn it up in the playoffs. The Cavs know what they did last year to make it to the Finals. They have to improve to actually win the championship this year.
