Heisman Trophy Race: College Football Week 9

Atlanta, GA 11/1/2007 2:44:11 AM

The Heisman Trophy race continues after yet another weekend of surprising losses and big games.

Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan had one of the season’s best performances last Thursday in a 14-10 win against Virginia Tech. Ryan threw two touchdown passes in the final 2:11 to be the Hokies in front of a sell-out crowd in Blacksburg, Va. He overcame a bad game to win. He threw 25-for-52 for 285 yards for those two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Eagles are 8-0 for the first time since 1942 and Ryan is the main reason why.

Kentucky quarterback Andre’ Woodson suffered his second loss in a row and third in four games. First it was against reigning national champion Florida. This time, it was a big upset at the hands of Mississippi State, 31-14. Woodson tied his career-high with three interceptions. He completed 24-of-42 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats have a bye this weekend.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has accounted for 27 TDs in his first seven games, more than the past six quarterbacks to win the Heisman through the same point in the season. That's Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch, Carson Palmer, Jason White, Matt Leinart and Troy Smith. He increased that number in his eighth game as he took on Georgia. The problem was he didn’t increase his team’s win column as the Bulldogs upset the Gators, 42-30. For the first time all season, he was held in the negative on the ground, rushing for -15 yards. In the air, he was effective, completing 14-of-22 for 236 yards and a touchdown. He also had two rushing touchdowns.

Arkansas running back Darren McFadden is dropping on the ranks due to his lack of production. Last week against Florida International, he had 19 carries for 61 yards. Even with his low yardage, he did have a career-high four touchdowns. Initially the leading rusher in the nation, he is now at 11th. The Razorbacks take on South Carolina on Saturday.

Michigan running back Mike Hart missed yet another game, his second in a row. He is expected to be back on Saturday against rival Michigan State.

Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon has continuously stepped up in the big games all season. On Saturday, he might have given the Ducks one of the program’s biggest wins as they defeated USC, 24-17. Dixon threw 16-for-25 for 157 yards and ran for 76 yards and a touchdown. He has run for one touchdown in each game this season, but snapped his streak of passing touchdowns. This week, he will take on Arizona State in a huge game for determining if Oregon can move up in the BCS standings.

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan threw 29-for-46 for 425 yards and six touchdowns in a 50-13 win against New Mexico State. His offense leads the nation in scoring and is second in passing offense and total offense. The Warriors will take on Fresno State on Saturday.

Rutgers running back Ray Rice is still having a great season, but his team is not doing as well as expected. He just suffered a tough 31-3 loss to West Virginia, but he still ran for 142 yards on 30 carries. He has been scoreless the last two games.
