Joe Girardi held his press conference Thursday, officially announcing his acceptance of the new managerial position with the New York Yankees.
Girardi will wear #27 to signify that he wants to win the Yankees' 27th World Series title.
Girardi received a $7.8 million, three-year contract, nearly four times the $2.1 million, three-year deal the Marlins gave him before the 2006 season for his first managing job.
He led a young Florida team to a 78-84 record, keeping the Marlins in contention. His Yankees contract includes a signing bonus of $300,000 payable over three years, annual salaries of $2.5 million and the chance to earn performance bonuses.
Girardi reached out to hitting coach Don Mattingly, who was interviewed for the manager position as well, to keep him on the staff. However, Mattingly said he was not interested in a coaching spot for next year.
He also reached out to former Yankees manager Joe Torre, who just became the new manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Girardi won three World Series titles with the Yankees as a catcher.
