World Cup Finals: Spain Edges Netherlands in Extra Time
Spain captured their first World Cup title in its country history on Sunday, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time.
With the game heading into the final moments of extra time Andres Iniesta managed to put a pass from Cesc Fabregas past Maarten Stekelenburg for the victory. That pass came shortly after Fabregas gained control of a Dutch turnover just outside the penalty area and spotted Iniesta cutting toward goal on the right side.
Spain then held on for the final minutes to end their World Cup drought, erasing themselves from the list of dominant soccer countries yet to capture the greatest title. Spain had the record for most victories at a World Cup without a title, 24, heading into Sunday’s match but that record now belongs to the Netherlands who own 19 World Cup wins but no title.
Sunday’s loss was the third time the Netherlands fell in the finals, the first since 1978. Coming into the match the Dutch had been streaking, having won all six of their World Cup matches but by the end of the day all those wins meant nothing as they suffered yet another disappointing loss in the finals.
