New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis will hold out during training camp, according to reports Monday.
Revis has been embroiled in a contract dispute with the team and has been disgruntled by the process by which his contract negotiations have gone.
Revis is set to make $1 million in the fourth year of his six-year rookie contract. He wants to be the league's highest-paid cornerback, a distinction that belongs to Nnamdi Asomugha, who signed a three-year, $45.3 million extension with the Oakland Raiders last offseason.
Revis is currently just the eighth-highest paid defensive back on the team, which is glaring due to his talent level. Many believe Revis is the best cornerback in the NFL.
By holding out, Revis will incur a $16,523-a-day fine and waive future guarantees in his current contract. Based on a clause, the $20 million he is scheduled to earn in 2011 and 2012 goes from guaranteed to non-guaranteed salary. He has three years remaining on his rookie deal.
According to ESPN, the Jets mad a long-term offer that would've made him a "Jet for life" and a short-term offer that would've increased his $1 million salary for 2010. Both proposals were rejected Friday night.
