Memphis Tigers Guard Will Barton Declared Eligible by NCAA
Memphis Tigers freshman guard Will Barton has been cleared by the NCAA to play during the 2010-11 college basketball season, according to head coach Josh Pastner. The NCAA's initial ruling to declare Barton ineligible was based on a rule requiring athletes to complete high school in eight semesters. Barton, the former five-star prospect, had graduated two months after the rest of his class, but had already determined that he would spend a year at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. Barton, the No. 11 player in the class of 2010 by Rivals.com, averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists while leading Lake Clifton to a state title in 2008-09, earning him the Baltimore Sun All-Metro Player of the Year honors. He helped Brewster Academy to the national prep school championship this year, averaging 20.8 points. Barton was named the MVP of the national prep school tournament.
Josh Selby, this year's Baltimore Sun All-Metro Player of the Year, has yet to be cleared for the Kansas Jayhawks. Selby was the No. 1 prospect in 2010 by Rivals.com, after starring at Lake Clifton this year. Pastner is also waiting on the NCAA to clear two other of his incoming freshmen: guard Chris Crawford and forward Hippolyte Tsafack.
