Kenny McKinley a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos who was on the injured reserve this season played in eight games during his rookie season in 2009.
The Arapahoe County sheriff's office confirmed the death. The team announced it was "deeply saddened" after being informed.
The cause of death is still not official. The Arapahoe County sheriff Grayson Robinson told the Denver Post that McKinley's death looked like an apparent suicide.
"It was apparently a suicide, but we're still investigating," Robinson told the paper.
Head coach Josh McDaniels of the Broncos stated:
"Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room," McDaniels said in a statement. "This is a tragic loss for our football team, and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
In 2009 McKinley was drafted in the fifth round. He was the 141st overall pick.
McKinley's death marks the third Bronco player to have died since 2007.
