The sudden death of surfing champ Andy Irons is being investigated as a possible methadone overdose, Star Advertiser reports. The three time surfing world champion was found dead in his Dallas hotel room Tuesday morning. According to reports, the powerful pain medication was found in his room.
Irons’ family says the 32-year-old was suffering from dengue fever, a tropical illness that causes severe muscle and joint pain. Irons was headed back home to Hawaii from Puerto Rico when he checked in to the Dallas hotel because he felt ill. The illness prevented him from competing in a surfing contest in Puerto Rico.
Autopsy results are expected within the next 3 months. Irons leaves behind his wife Lyndie, who is 7 months pregnant with their first child.
"It's just such a major loss. We were very proud of him as a family. Just naturally gifted ability and just a blessing for all of the family. That's what his real gift was,” Irons’ uncle Rick told the Star Advertiser.
