The 40-year-old woman who went into cardiac arrest while participating in Sunday’s Nautica New York City Triathlon has died. According to a spokesperson for St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Illinois native Amy Martich passed away on Monday – a day after a male competitor identified as 64-year-old Mike Kudryk also died of cardiac arrest.
Both Martich and Kudryk went in to cardiac arrest during the swim portion of the triathlon. Martich was about halfway through the 1,500-meter swim when rescue teams pulled her from the water. Kudryk was about two-thirds through when other participants altered rescue teams to his condition. Both Martich and Kudryk were treated by paramedics at the scene and rushed to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital where Kudryk was pronounced dead upon arrive and Martich was listed in critical condition.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has demanded a review of the triathlon’s safety measures. “New Yorkers signed up for a triathlon – not a game of Russian Roulette. Choosing to compete is a decision every athlete has to make for themselves – but it is the obligation of the city to make sure all potential risks are accounted for to the extent possible,” he said in a statement Monday.
