Ozone Generator Certification Program Announced

National standards for ozone machines are intend to improve the ozone service industry

The National Ozone Association (NOAI) has announced the establishment of a set of core standards for professional and industrial ozone generators.  As the number of ozone manufacturers grows, the misrepresentations have also grown.  In an effort to create a standard of quality for professional remediation equipment, the National Ozone Association is prepared to provide an independent review for safety, accuracy, and quality of ozone generators.

NOAI Approved® is a federal trademark that is intended to designate a higher level of professional remediation equipment that meet the core standard found in the National Standards for Ozone Remediation.

In 2014, the National Ozone Association began a project to create a set of professional standards for the use of ozone as a remediation tool.  Ozone is basically another form of oxygen that has been enriched through an ozone generator.  While active, ozone is used for odor elimination, sanitizing of buildings and food, killing mold, and neutralizing pollution.  In addition, ozone begins to revert back to normal oxygen in about twenty minutes leaving no chemical residue behind.

Since ozone is a respiratory irritant, the high levels of ozone required for remediation should be applied by a trained and certified ozone technician.  The National Ozone Association has trained hundreds of professionals in the proper use of ozone.  Professional-type ozone generators should not be used by amateurs.  This warning includes in-house staff that have not taken ozone safety training.

Professional services using ozone are: biotrauma, fire and flood restoration, duct cleaning services, odor removal services, and mold remediation services to name only a few examples.  Ozone is also used in the new generation of laundry systems, water purification for spas and pools, and in the food processing industry.

As the rise of this environmentally-smart solution increases, the development of ozone standards has become a more important concern.  The nexus between manufacturers and purchasers is often the representations on a website.  There has been no independent review program for ozone generators thus far.  In the end, a professional review will encourage higher standards for manufacturers and greater safety for those involved in the commercial use of ozone generators.

Any manufacturer or ozone generator system can request a certification review from the National Ozone Association.  This review applies to portable units used by professional services or commercial systems that wish to verify the overall quality of the installation.  NOAI's goal is not to discourage the growth of ozone remediation services, but to assure that the information and tools used in these applications are more than Internet hype.

Thus far, ozone generators and ozone services have been a small and obscure segment of the market that has had no formal standards.  As this important remediation process grows in popularity, abuses and mistakes can bring unnecessary criticism to this industry.  The solution is an education and certification program to assure professional-level services, and a voluntary effort by manufacturers and service providers to establish the best practices for ozone treatment.

The National Ozone Association invites others to participate in the advancement of the ozone service industry by investigating the ozone generator certification program.
