The cost of mechanical structural parts (including hinges) in the Galaxy Fold model is about US$88 (BOM accounts for about 13.8%), and the cost increase is second only to the display module. Traditional hinge technology solutions require the use of multiple processes such as MIM, stamping, and CNC precision machining. As leading manufacturers, American companies Amphenol and Taiwan AVC have widely used hinge components and assembly businesses in folding screen terminals for customers such as Samsung.

After several generations of process innovation, the hinge of the folding screen has now become a battleground. In 2019, Samsung Galaxy Fold first adopted the mode of slide rail plus dual shaft, which was the first commonly used U-shaped hinge; then, Huawei's first generation Mate X and Mate Xs pioneered the use of external folding hinge design; Motorola took the lead in introducing the "water drop" shape concept on Razr 5G, which effectively solved the crease problem; in 2020, Huawei launched the Mate X2, which combined internal folding, water drop hinge, dual shaft, slide rail and spring damping to achieve a fully closed and high-quality folding screen. Subsequent mobile phone manufacturers have begun to use water drop hinges.

The water drop hinge has become the mainstream solution for folding screen hinges due to its relatively low cost, relatively stable structure and relatively high feasibility. At present, there are two types of hinges in the market: U-shaped hinges and water drop hinges. There are also some hinge structures independently developed by some brands. Technically, the U-shaped hinge has a smaller bending radius and is prone to creases. The bending area radius of the water drop hinge is larger, and the bending at the folding point is more natural when the screen is folded. The crease will be relatively shallow, and this folding method will also reduce screen wear and make the folding screen more durable.

The hinge is generally assembled from hundreds of metal parts with a processing accuracy of 0.01mm. Therefore, the hinge processing technology is very important. Traditional hinge technology solutions require the use of MIM, stamping, CNC precision processing and other processes. Compared with other processes, the MIM process has the comprehensive advantages of high design freedom (suitable for the production of complex parts), strong mass production capacity (high efficiency of mass production), and lower cost. As leading manufacturers, Amphenol and AVC of Taiwan, China, etc., hinge parts and assembly businesses have been widely used in folding screen terminals of customers such as HMOV+Samsung.

In recent years, the folding screen industry chain has gradually developed and matured, and Chinese mainland companies have also competed to expand their domestic and foreign customers. With the further iteration of the folding screen hinge form, the complexity and processing accuracy of parts will continue to improve, and the comprehensive advantages of MIM technology will be further highlighted, and it is expected to become the mainstream processing solution for folding screen hinges.
