Big Biz Show Supports Nancarrow Project for Cancer Patients

San Diego 12/21/2013 7:12:32 AM

San Diego, CA (Press Release)– Big Biz Show host Bob “Sully” Sullivan, who has helped raise nearly $70,000 for the Challenged Athletes Fund, welcomed former TV anchor Susan Taylor of Scripps Health and Hannah Nancarrow, daughter of local television news anchor Loren Nancarrow, to the December 20 show. Taylor and Nancarrow were there to talk about the Nancarrow Project, a blog that openly discusses Loren’s battle with highly aggressive brain cancer.

“It’s heartbreaking and earth-shattering, and it changes everything about every single day.” Hannah Nancarrow

While most people diagnosed with brain cancer are concerned with their own health and prospects of recovery, Loren has channeled his efforts into helping to provide support for others who are facing similar hardhips. Through his blog, TheNancarrowProject.com, he has openly shared his challenges with friends, family and supporters around the world. Shortly after his diagnosis he spoke with former colleague Taylor, telling her he wanted to thank all those involved in his care and also to help as many cancer patients as possible.

In honor of Loren, who is also an avid organic farmer and the author of four gardening books, Scripps Health and The Nancarrow Project are now raising funds to name the healing garden on the second story rooftop of the new Scripps Radiation Therapy Center after him. The garden provides a place for patients and their families to relax between treatments among plants, trees and a water fountain. The goal of the project is to raise $500,000 in order to name the garden “The Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden in honor of all that Loren has done for the community of San Diego and beyond.

“It’s this beautiful, contemplative, quiet place,” explained Taylor. “At Scripps we understand that we need to take care of your body, but the healing process also involves your mind and your heart and your soul.”

Being writers, both Loren and Hannah decided to take to a blog to share their thoughts as Loren went through brain surgeries, radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Through their writing, the two have been able to find support and a measure of acceptance for the situation.

“I know that it’s helping people out there,” said Hannah of the blog, “but from our perspective each time someone comments it feels like a warm hug.”

The project has currently raised more than $55,000 and is working to reach its goal as soon as possible so that Loren, who is in the final stages of cancer, can see the fruits of the efforts. Sullivan has provided links on The Big Biz Show website in order for viewers to donate to the cause.

“It is my wish that we can take Loren up to that garden, once we hit that $500,000 mark, and say, ‘Loren, this is yours,” said Taylor.
