Long Beach, CA – Master Michael Edward Reid, a 6th Degree Black Sash in Shaolin Kung Fu with a focus on the internal arts of Tai Chi and Pa Kua (Ba Gua), was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame at the annual Awards Banquet on Friday, August 1, at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. This year the Masters Hall of Fame was held in conjunction with the Long Beach Internationals, a premier karate championship founded by legendary American Kenpo Grandmaster Ed Parker. In addition to his success in the martial arts, Master Reid excelled in football at the University of Wisconsin and with the NFL Atlanta Falcons and was inducted into his hometown of Albany, Georgia, Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Master Reid began his martial arts studies under 8th DegreeShaolin Elder Master Gary Grooms and he trained with extensively with Shaolin Grandmaster Sin Kwan The’, 8th Degree Elder Master Garry Mullins and 8th Degree Elder Master Tim Nance. He has also worked and studied with Sifu Steve Johnson to refine body mechanics and study concept-based martial arts principles. In addition to his Shaolin Kung Fu studies, Master Reid has trained privately in weapons application and empty-hand combat techniques with Guru Bruce Jolly. He has also trained with Master Ji Jian Cheng, Director of Wu Shu at Hangzou University in China and the late Sifu Terrance Walker, who introduced him to African stick play and African Ground Snake, and he has been influenced by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming. Currently in conjunction with his Shaolin studies he is a private student of Pendekar Bahati Mershant and Guru Phillip Ghee in the art of Kuntao Silat.“I am extremely humbled to be recognized in the field that I began studying in 1988 and that I have dedicated my professional life to as a practitioner, instructor and school owner.” -Master Michael Reid
As the son of a football coach and former college and professional player, Master Reid seemed destined for the gridiron. However, he became entranced by the original Kung Fu television series, more for the life lessons and philosophy than the action. He dreamed of becoming a Shaolin Master, and in 2010 that dream became reality when he earned his 6th Degree Shaolin Master rank. Today Master Reid runs Reid’s Shaolin Martial Arts, with full locations in Marietta and Roswell, Georgia, and club locations at Georgia Tech and in Dawsonville and Rome, Georgia.
“I am extremely humbled to be recognized in the field that I began studying in 1988 and that I have dedicated my professional life to as a practitioner, instructor and school owner,” says Master Reid, who accepts this honor on behalf of all those who have taught him or trained with him. “I have truly been blessed to have great people in my life, and it is because of them that I am here today and in a position to accept this most prestigious award.”
Since opening his academy in 1993, Master Reid has had the privilege of working with thousands of students. His goal has always been to be a positive influence on the growth and personal development of those he trains.
