How Green is your Bathroom
They can be Clean, but are they Green?
Visitors often judge a company or institution on the condition of its restrooms. Let’s use the restaurant industry as an example. According to a recent online consumer survey conducted by Harris Interactive, “88% of adults who visit restaurants agree that restroom cleanliness reflects the hygiene standards throughout the restaurant, including kitchen and food prep areas.” The same survey found that 29% said they would never return to a restaurant with an extremely unclean restroom. And 50% said they would tell their friends!
Although clean restrooms are vitally important, customers are today also requesting for “Green” restrooms. Customers want to see less water, paper and soap wasted and that Green Cleaning products are used to clean the restroom. The good news is that new “touch-free” plumbing technologies are Green and make good business sense because they can help reduce operating costs, conserve water and energy and improve hygiene. So how do I make my restrooms Green?
Before you invest in any new plumbing fixtures or related products, we suggest you first do a self-analysis:
- How many public restrooms do you have in your organization?
- How many people do you have in your organization? (break it down by number males & females)
- How many visitors do you receive per day? (e.g. restaurant or hotel)
- Take an inventory existing equipment:
- Number of toilets, urinals, faucets, paper & soap dispensers, and auto hand dryers.
- Identify automatic vs. manual products.
- Write down product names and numbers.
Contact your local municipality to find out if they offer any water rebates for installing water-saving fixtures. A little research will add value to the changes you might make.
Once you have this information on hand, it will much easier to set-up goals with specific outcomes for your restrooms such as:
- Reduce the water bill by 20% by the end of 2010.
- Reduce our paper expense by 15% by the end of 2010.
- Reduce the potential for cross-contamination by installing touch-free technology.

Low installation costs.
Return on Investment, i.e. a payback of 12 months or less.
