Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes and Washington Wizards point guard John Wall have each been suspended for one game after having been involved in scuffles during their previous games.
Wall is suspended for having punched Zydrunas Ilgauskas of the Miami Heat during Wednesday night's game. Big Z apparently elbowed a closely defensive Wall a couple of times while trying to establish his position, and Wall reacted by punching Big Z in what appeared to be his ribs.
"Got hit by the elbow and reacted to it. Disappointed in the way I reacted. I let my teammates down, let the organization down," Wall said. "It was two elbows. I got hit with the first one; I stopped and waited. And the second one, I got hit, and I just reacted."
Wall and Ilgauskas each received a flagrant 2 and were ejected from the game. Juwann Howard pushed Javale McGee of the Wizards during the scuffle and was also ejected from the game, although he only received a technical foul.
"Ilgauskas tried to punk [Wall], hit him in the face with his elbow," said McGee. "Obviously, [Wall] wasn't going for it. ... I went over there to break it up, and Juwan Howard tried to come over and blind-side, push me, or whatever."
Howard and Ilgauskas have not been suspended but both have received fines - $35,000 for Howard and $25,000 for Big Z.
Matt Barnes has also been suspended for one game after having gotten into a fight with Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks during Thursday night's game.
The altercation began when Jason Terry pushed Lakers guard Steve Blake to the floor after Blake attempted a drive to the basket. Barnes then decided to get involved and shoved Terry.
"I get an extra day of rest for my knee. Ill be watching the game 2nite w/the rest of the laker fans, on tv," tweeted Barnes. "All good team will keep it(cont) Rolln 2nite vs the Jazz.. Ill be bak sunday.. Appreciate the support from all the lakeshow fans.. RESPECT!!"
Barnes will serve his suspension on the Lakers' Friday night game against the Utah Jazz.
