Brandon Roy Almost Cried Because He Was Benched
Portland Trail Blazers Player Hurt by Being Benched
Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy says that he fought back tears while he was on the bench during the Trail Blazers' Game 2 loss against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.
But Roy wasn't sad simply because his team lost. Rather, Roy said that he felt hurt and saddened by the fact that he wasn't getting more play time.
Having played only 8 minutes in Game 2, Roy told The Oregonian that "[I] always thought I would be treated a little better," meaning basically that he thought he would receive more playing time after coming back from mid-season knee injuries that had sidelined him for 2 months.
"There was a point in the first half, and I was thinking, 'You better not cry,'" said Roy. "I mean, serious. I mean, there was a moment where I felt really sorry for myself. Then I was like, nah, you can't be sorry for yourself. I'm a grown man, but there was a moment there that I felt sorry for myself. Especially when I think I can still help."
Unfortunately, Roy has not been particularly effective when he has been able to play during this first round playoff series against the Mavs. In Game 1, he scored only 2 points on 1-of-7 shooting in 26 minutes. He went scoreless in Game 2, missing a field goal, missing two free throws, and recording one turnover in just 8 minutes.
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little hurt, or disappointed," Roy said. "But the biggest thing is to keep moving, to try and keep my spirits up. But it's tough, man. I just ... I just always thought I would be treated better. That was a little disappointing for me."
But despite his disappointments, Roy says that he has no intention of approaching Portland coach Nate McMillan.
"I think my nature I've never been one to confront. Never been the one to create controversy," said Roy. "I think Coach is comfortable with his guys and it's hard for him to get me back in there. If that's what he is comfortable with, then I'm going to try and support the team. And if he can get us past [the first round], then he can. I just always thought I would be treated a little better, but ... it is what it is. I'll be all right. I'll go home, see my kids, and be happy."
