Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose has been named the MVP of the 2010-2011 NBA season. The Bulls have scheduled a news conference for 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday. According to the team, they have a "major announcement" to make.
At the age of 22, Rose is the youngest player in the history of the NBA to receive the award. He has supplanted former Baltimore Bullets player Wes Unseld, who was 23 when he won the award back in 1969.
Rose was widely expected to receive the award. He led the Bulls to a 62-20 season record and a No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference while averaging 25 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Rose said on Monday that he hadn't heard anything about his winning the award.
"Not yet. Still hearing from it," said Rose. "But right now, I'm sorry to say that's the last thing I'm thinking about. I'm sorry."
Michael Jordan was the last Bulls player to win the award, having won it five times. Jordan said earlier in the season that Rose deserves the award.
Bulls center Joakim Noah is happy for Rose but also has his mind somewhere else now.
"I think it's great. I think he's very well-deserving," said Noah. "I think it's a situation where everybody knows it's his. It's not like somebody else deserves it. It's for him and I'm happy for him, but there's really no time to celebrate it right now. We're in a dogfight against Atlanta."
Bulls forward Carlos Boozer is also happy for Rose.
"Well deserved," said Boozer. "I've been shouting his praise all season for what he's been able to do for our team. I'm proud of him, he deserved it."
Bulls guard Kyle Korver says that Rose will probably only get better as time passes.
"He's humble, he's coachable. It doesn't matter if the 12th man on the team says something to him, he's going to look you in the eye and listen to you and nod his head and try to do it better," said Korver. "That's just the kind of guy he is. And that is so rare. That is so rare. So to be on his team, to watch him grow this year, he's really matured as a [player]. And he's still raw. He can still get a lot better. That's the scary thing. And he will because he works really hard. And he's got great people around him, coaching him, and helping him out."
