Giants Catcher Buster Posey Likely out for Season
Baseball Player Suffers Leg Fracture After Collision
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey will likely miss the rest of the season after his leg was fractured during a game versus the Florida Marlins on Wednesday.
Posey was holding home plate when Florida player Scott Cousins collided hard into Posey. The hit left Posey with a fractured bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle.
"It's part of baseball, I understand that, guys running into catchers. Being a catcher, I've been in a few of them. You're in harm's way there," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "I think we do need to consider changing the rules here a little bit because the catcher is so vulnerable and there's so many who have gotten hurt. And not just a little bit, had their careers ended or shortened. And here's a guy who's very popular in baseball. Fans want to see him play... Now he's out for a while."
Posey has been the Giants' cleanup pitcher, contributing 4 home runs and 21 RBIs on a .284 batting average. He was in the midst of a 13-game hitting streak when the hard hit put him on the disabled list.
"I'm not going to try and be Buster Posey," said backup player Eli Whiteside, who will serve as Posey's immediate replacement. "That's our cleanup hitter and one of the best hitters in baseball. I'll do my best and play my game, but I'm not going to try to be Buster Posey."
Cousins felt very bad about the incident, saying that he sent his condolences to the Giants clubhouse and tried to call Posey twice overnight.
"The last thing I wanted to do was break a guy's leg," said Cousins, with teary eyes.
Posey will reportedly be seeking a specialist to peform surgery, but Giants trainer Dave Groeschner has not yet given a timetable for Posey's return.
