2014 Imaging Industry Hardware Forecast Shows Growth in Monochrome and Color Laser Printers and Multifunction Printers

Inkjet and Impact Technologies Continue to Decline

Photizo Group’s 2014 Hardware Forecast shows unit shipment growth in monochrome single function printers (SFP) and monochrome multifunction printers (MFP) as well as growth in color SFP and color MFPs through the forecast period. Despite these gains, Photizo forecasts a 1.5 percent decline in shipments through the forecast period. The forecast provides detailed information on worldwide shipments, revenue, and trends from 2010 to 2018. 
Manufacturers are seeking to find growth areas amidst a slowly recovering economy. In addition, the printer market is undergoing several cyclical and secular factors. Newer users are not printing as much as mobile technology and screen-based systems provide up-to-the-minute information to users in an easily digestible format. Managed print services continues to have a major effect on the number of print devices. 
With these changes, Photizo expects the printer market to decline from 111 million units in 2013 to 109 million units in 2014 with a further decline to 108 million units in 2018. Based on previous forecasts, this year’s forecast is somewhat hopeful for the future of print.
The worldwide decline in ink jets stands at 12.8 percent through the forecast period but page-wide-array devices may mitigate that drop if they become accepted in small- and medium-sized businesses, corporations, and enterprise organizations. The trend toward monochrome and color MFPs is quite strong, although in the emerging markets, SFP are still very popular.

The forecast has been developed following a specific forecast methodology that has crosschecks to confirm data for all technology segments of the office imaging industry.
