Romania’s GDP increased by 1.5% in real terms in 2011 – a development which highlights that the country is getting back on track following the recent crisis. Growth was recorded in the majority of areas of Romania’s tourism industry in 2011. However, there are concerns over future performance as a result of fears over the Eurozone economy, the depreciation of the Euro and high unemployment rates in some European countries. Nevertheless, Romania can take pride in its development over the review period. Romania’s strategic and operational plan to invest in marketing its tourism sector has started to positively impact tourism numbers and this trend is expected to continue over the coming years.
Romanians develop a taste for cruises
Romanians are developing a taste for cruise holidays. Mediterranean cruises are particularly popular due to their cheap price. In addition, the price of such a holiday also depends on how much it costs to arrive at the harbour from which the cruise departs. For example, the price of a cruise which departs from a European port (in Spain or Italy for instance) which is served by low cost airlines will be significantly lower than that of a cruise which leaves from Miami or New York. Romanians prefer cruises that depart from Greece, Spain and the Nile, with average prices ranging from EUR349 to over EUR1,000. Cheaper cruises can be booked in the Adriatic at a starting price of EUR749. Other Romanian tourists choose the Norwegian fjords, the British Isles, the Scandinavian peninsula or the Baltic capitals.
Low cost carriers remain Romanian’s favourite air transport providers
Low cost carriers continue to expand in Romania. Tourists are increasingly opting to travel with such carriers, especially since average national incomes in Romania are far lower than those in developed countries. Low cost carriers continue to fail to provide enhanced quality service, with many customers complaining about uncomfortable seats and strict luggage restrictions. However, most consumers are prepared to put-up with a lower level of service in order to save money.
