Components of an Electric
Control Panel
An electric control panel contains several key components that work together to
safely automate industrial processes. Some of the main components include:
Circuit Breakers and Fuses: Circuit breakers and fuses act as a protective
device to shut off power to part of the control panel if there is an overload
or short circuit. This prevents damage and protects workers. Common types
include thermal-magnetic circuit breakers.
Power Supply and Distribution: The Electric
Control Panel receives power from the main electricity source and distributes
it to the individual components through busbars. Transformers may be used to
step down high voltages to safer levels.
Push Buttons and Selector Switches: These manual inputs allow workers to start,
stop and control processes. Push buttons are commonly used for intermittent
control while selector switches choose between different operating modes.
Pilot Devices: Pilot lights, which turn on to visually indicate the status of a
machine, are a common pilot device. Others include audible and visual alarms to
alert workers.
Relays and Contactors: These electrically-operated switches control heavy
currents needed for motors, solenoids or other loads. Contactors are used for
higher currents than relays. Contactors and relays receive signals from PLCs or
push buttons.
Programmable Logic Controllers: PLCs are digital computers used for automation
that can be programmed to control machines based on inputs. They are connected
to sensors, switches and outputs.
