Crater of Diamonds State Park Provides Man with Lucky Find

Atlanta, Ga. 10/25/2007 12:07:55 AM

Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas has long been the scene of novice prospectors digging through the earth in search of precious stones. On Tuesday one man discovered that you didn’t have to dig, you just have to keep your eyes open.

Eric Blake’s arm grew weary after toting a 70-pound bucket of mud along a trail in the state park when he stopped to switch arms. In that moment of exhaustion he looked down and spotted a 3.92-carat diamond sitting before him.

It has been a good couple of days for the Wisconsin native as he had already collected a 1.49-carat diamond on Monday while his fiancée, Susan Gabrielson, unearthed a 1.47-carat stone the same day.

While the Eric Blake finding is certainly notable, it is far from the record find discovered more than 80 years ago when a 40-carat stone, known as the Uncle Sam diamond, was found in the same state park.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only park in the world that provides free access to the public and allows people to keep the stones they find.
