Google has admitted that the curious outage in a number of their services early Thursday morning was caused by an upgrade error on their part.
According to several reports Google had been attempting to make changes to Internet routing numbers as part of its conversion from an older networking standard to a newer one. While undergoing this process Google experienced a hardware failure which in turn prevented Internet service providers from locating Google’s new routing numbers, thus the shutdown.
The outage lasted for just over an hour and became a hot topic on the Web as many suspected the search giant had been hacked. Google has not been specific regarding what caused the outage but did say they would detail the source of the problem at a later time.
