RateMyCop.com has become the thorn in the side of police agencies across the country. The website allows pedestrians to rate police officers that pull them over.
RateMyCop.com has the names of thousands of officers, and many believe it is putting them in danger. However, according to the owner of the site, no personal information, such as home addresses and phone numbers, will not be available on the site.
The site has officers’ names, which are public information, from more than 450 police agencies nationwide. Some listings also have badge numbers along with the officer’s names.
Personally, I think "Rate My Cop" holds overly aggressive and roguish cops accountable for their actions. The rating system allows police officers to know exactly who they have in their force and what the general public opinion is of their departments.
In reverse, it can put more faith into the police departments if the ratings end up high for the officers. There is a disconnect between the people and the officers who serve them, for many believe police officers are crooked.
In order for you to feel safe, you must feel like you are protected by those who have your best interest at heart. The ratings will make cops self-conscious of how they come across to people, even if they are criminals.
Although the site is down right now, the web site address is http://www.ratemycop.com.
