One of the world’s most recognizable statues, Michelangelo’s David, is said to be in danger of cracking and collapsing due to its exposure to mass tourism.
Italian experts have said the figure has shown considerable wear since its restoration just four years ago, an indication that the marble statute could easily succumb to the continued traffic it attracts at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence.
In celebration of its 500th anniversary David underwent detailed repair to fill in cracks yet those cracks have already opened due to vibrations caused from pounding feet of tourists.
Restoration experts want to insulate David from these dangerous vibrations but hat would come at a cost of nearly 1m euros.
