Dawna Lee Heising of EOE Attends Art of Outstanding Television Costume Design Event at FIDM Museum

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Costume Design Honors the 61st Primetime Emmy® Award Nominees for Outstanding Costumes at the FIDM Museum & Galleries

Dawna Lee Heising and John Alsedek of the Time Warner Cable show Eye on Entertainment covered the opening of the “Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design” on Saturday, July 25, 2009.  The fourth edition of the “Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design” exhibit is being presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the FIDM Museum & Galleries at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles.  Free to the public, the exhibit runs from Wednesday, July 29 through Saturday, September 6, 2009.

The fourth annual exhibition will showcase a retrospective of television's most memorable costume designs from the past and present and will salute the work of this year's Emmy nominated costume design and costume supervisors which include the following: The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, United States of Tara, The Tudors and Grey Gardens.   Also taking part in the exhibit are costumes from past Emmy winners and nominees: John Adams, Ghost Whisperer, L Word, Gossip Girl, Dancing with the Stars, Without a Trace, Coco Chanel, Sense & Sensibility and Castle.

For the fourth year, the guest curator and organizer of the “Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design” exhibition is noted costume designer Mary Rose, Television Academy Governor, Costume Design & Supervision, and President of the Costume Designers Guild.  Ms. Rose, a noted designer for feature films, television/cable series and movies, is now serving her seventh term as Governor with the Costume Design and Supervision Peer Group of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. She has been the curator of numerous costume exhibitions in the United States and abroad. 

Since 1991, exhibitions have been viewed in the FIDM Museum & Galleries on the ground floor of the college. February 2000 saw the opening of our expanded galleries. Exhibitions are installed throughout the year, and range from traveling exhibitions to FIDM students' work and FIDM-developed installations. “The FIDM Museum & Galleries presents two major exhibitions annually, including "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" and "The Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design”.  According to Barbara Bundy, Vice President–Education, FIDM, “The exhibitions feature costumes from the previous year's best films and television programs including samplings of Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy® Award-nominated costumes.”

Attendees included Janie Bryant, Costume Designer for Mad Men, Jo Katsaras, Costume Designer for The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Kim Martinez, Costume Designer for The Librarian, Jennifer Kamrath, Costume Supervisor for The Librarian, Salvador Perez, Costume Designer for Castle, Randall Christensen, Costume Designer for Dancing with the Stars, Dorothy Amos, Costume Designer for Ghost Whisperer, Cynthia Summer, Costume Designer for The L Word, Kirston Mann, Costume Designer for United States of Tara and Like Reichie, Costume Designer for Without a Trace.

Winners of The Costume Designers Guild Awards will be announced on February 17, 2009 at the awards gala. Founded in 1953, The Costume Designers Guild aspires to raise the stature of the Costume Design profession within the entertainment community commensurate with the incalculable contribution Costume Designers make to each motion picture, television, or commercial, illuminating the characters with accuracy and integrity, thereby enhancing the story.  The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences began to recognize outstanding costume design in 1970 when the first Emmys were presented in this category. About FIDM Museum & Galleries at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising

The FIDM Museum Foundation, located at The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, was founded in 1978 in Los Angeles, California. It is non-profit, and located on the Los Angeles campus. It is comprised of multiple museum-gallery spaces and an impressive historical and contemporary costume collection.  The FIDM Museum & Galleries space is 10,000 square feet, and mounts two or three major exhibitions each year. Annually, the Museum plays host to the movie industry by presenting its highly anticipated exhibition, The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design. This exhibition salutes the work of motion picture costume designers from major films, including Academy Award winning and nominated designs.
