Dawna Lee Heising of Eye on Entertainment on Time Warner Cable interviewed multi-talented playwright, screenwriter, professor and Fulbright scholar, Weiko Lin Born in Taiwan, Weiko immigrated to Los Angeles when he was eight years old. A Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award recipient (past winners include Francis Ford Coppola – Godfather and Eric Roth – Forrest Gump) and Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Nicholl Screenwriting Fellow Finalist, Weiko holds a B.A. in English and a M.F.A. in Film and Television from UCLA. He started his career in the theater where he wrote and directed plays and musicals at UCLA Royce Hall, Veterans Wadsworth Theater, and the former Century City Playhouse. Most recently, his last play The Best Man world premiered at East West Players’ David Henry Hwang Theater in May 2007.
Weiko was invited to teach at Taipei National University of the Arts in their MFA Screenwriting Program in December 2008 and June 2009. The filmmaking program is headed by veteran Taiwanese Producer Peggy Chiao who recently produced The Drummer starring Jackie Chan’s son, Jaycee Chan. The film premiered at 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
In film, Weiko recently wrote an untitled feature film for Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated producer, Mark Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy, Saving Private Ryan), for which he will also serve as executive producer. In addition, he has a comedy in active development with Madhouse Entertainment (Stay, Bounty).. Presently, he is developing an action thriller with Atlas Entertainment (The Dark Knight)).
For the stage, he wrote and directed world premieres of the plays Tracks of Tears (1997, Wadsworth Theater, Blind Street (2003, Century City Playhouse) and The Best Man (2007, East-West Theatre). On the original musical front, he penned book and lyrics as well as directed Heavenly Peace (1999, UCLA Royce Hall), Parachute Kid (2001, UCLA Royce Hall) and Harriet Z (2009).
Weiko is a faculty member in screenwriting at Northwestern University and is a member of the Writers Guild of America and co-chair of its Asian American Writers Committee.
