Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz appeared on Eye on Entertainment in December 2010 to promote his new book “You Are Not Your Brain”, co-written with Dr. Rebecca Gladding.  Dr. Schwartz is a research psychiatrist at the School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles and one of the world’s leading experts in neuroplasticity. Decades ago, he began to study the philosophy of conscious awareness, the idea that the actions of the mind have an effect on the workings of the brain.

Dr. Schwartz’s new book, co-authored with Dr. Rebecca Gladding, You Are Not Your Brain: The 4-Step Solution for Ending Destructive Behavior, Changing Bad Habits, and Taking Control of Your Life, expands upon the Four Step recovery method outlined in his revolutionary bestseller “Brain Lock”.   In this new book, Dr. Schwarz and Dr. Gladding, two leading UCLA psychiatrists, discuss cutting-edge research that explains why the brain can deceive people and how to make the brain work for, instead of against, them. Using their clinically proven, renowned Four Step method that increases awareness of deceptive brain messages, readers learn how to access and bolster – most often without medications – the loving, smart inner guide within themselves to prevent the deceiving brain from taking control of their lives. 

“You Are Not Your Brain” focuses on helping people use the Four Step method to deal with anxiety, depression, overeating, overthinking/overanalyzing, as well as find new, lasting ways to change habits that are unhelpful to them, such as using alcohol, substances or unhealthy behaviors to alleviate stress or deal with unsettling feelings and experiences.  The book will be released by Avery/Penguin in June 2011.

Dr. Schwartz's breakthrough work in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) provided the hard evidence that the mind can control the brain's chemistry. Donald Trump, Howie Mandel and Howard Stern are among the millions of others in the world who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), a neurobiological anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and a need to perform repetitive and ritualistic behaviors (compulsions). Dr. Schwartz received an honors degree in philosophy from the University of Rochester, and in the 1970s began to immerse himself in Buddhist philosophy--in particular, the philosophy of mindfulness, or conscious awareness. This is the idea that the mind is an active participant in the world, and that when the actions of the mind have an effect on the workings of the brain. It became his goal to find a scientific underpinning for the belief that mindfulness affects how the brain works. In the 1990s, at UCLA, he made his key discovery: that a four-step cognitive behavioral therapy he pioneered is capable to changing the activity in a specific brain circuit of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, as shown on PET scans.  The four steps to OCD recovery are:  Relabel, Reattribute, Refocus and Revalue.  In You Are Not Your Brain the Four Steps have been modified to Relabel, Reframe, Refocus and Revalue.  

Rebecca L. Gladding, M.D. is a Clinical Instructor and Attending Psychiatrist at the UCLA Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.  She graduated from UCSF School of Medicine and completed her psychiatry residency at UCLA.  She has been honored with several teaching awards and was featured in the A&E Television Network’s critically acclaimed series Obsessed.

Dr. Gladding has been working with Dr. Jeffrey M. Schwartz since 1999 and shares his philosophy that the mind can change the brain – most often without medications (or at the very least minimizing their use as much as possible).  She is an expert in the biology underlying deceptive brain messages, mindfulness and the Four Steps and regularly teaches people how to apply the Four Steps to their lives, businesses and relationships.
