Dawna Lee Heising of Eye on Entertainment interviewed filmmaker Ace Jordan at the Time Warner Cable studio in Costa Mesa, CA in January 2011. Jordan is the writer, producer and director of the short film “Kill Devil Hill”. The film is "a re-enactment of one of the most bizarre crimes in history; an unsolved crime that triggered a bizarre series of murders throughout North Carolina." “Kill Devil Hill” was named one of the Top 20 Horror Films of 2010 by Examiner.com, a remarkable achievement as it was the only short film on the list.
“Kill Devil Hill” follows the Reed family, Jesse (Taylor Graham), his wife Jamie (Melinda Bennett) and their two sons Joey (Aiden Miranda) and James (Hunter Miranda), at the end of a seemingly average day. Jamie puts the boys to bed for the night, and then heads off to her bedroom. What starts off as an average evening soon transforms into a horrifyingly nightmarish demonic scenario, one that will leave this average American family in ruin.
Jordan started writing at the age of 13 and began shopping scripts in the Hollywood film market at 16. During his high school years, he became an expert at a relatively new technology at the time. digital non-linear editing. He was also awarded the Creative Writing II - Student of the Year award. At 18, Jordan got his first job as a script doctor on “Stealth”, a low budget action film. Later, he was contracted to write a one hour teleplay for an HBO series in development about congressional medal of honor winners, co-created by Steven Seagal. Jordan's first horror film "Don't Fear the Reaper" caught the attention of Orion Talent and was shopped to over 40 major production companies. In 2005, Jordan formed Jordanfilm Empirical Pictures, and directed the kung-fu comedy short "The Legend of Drunken Monk." Currently, Jordan is shopping his feature directorial debut, the suspense/thriller “Silent Retreat”, while scripting a feature version of “Kill Devil Hill”. Jordan also works as an editor on commercials, industrials, product and web videos. To see the EOE interview with Jordan, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogHzf_Ex2AQ
On “Kill Devil Hill”, Jordan had to wear many hats in order to keep the cost down. He says that the visual effects were the most difficult part of making the film since he basically had to learn on the spot. Jordan knew that bad special effects could ruin the movie, so he took two months and watched a plethora of tutorials, did some demos and taught himself how to do the special effects for the film. “My biggest influence is Stanley Kubrick”, says Jordan. “We both have an obsessive eye for detail. I believe this subtle OCD is what makes me a good editor. He adds, “I also try to create material that pushes the envelope of not only genre but where a film can take you psychologically.”
